About This Coffee

Farm & Elevation

Bekele Yutute owns three coffee farms in Bensa Woreda: Dambi, Kokose, and Murago. Among these, Kokose is situated at the highest altitude, reaching 2,345 meters above sea level.

Bekele began cultivating JARC 74110 coffee at Kokose in 2021 in partnership with his brother-in-law, Samuel. Their efforts were quickly recognised, earning 5th place in the 2021 Cup of Excellence (CoE) and 3rd place in the 2024 CoE.

The Kokose farm is located on an open mountainside, where the temperature remains cool and the area is often covered in clouds.

Variety Notes

This particular lot consists of 100% 74158.

74158 is commonly referred to as a JARC cultivar (JARC standing for Jimma Agricultural Research Centre). 74158 is the Catalogue number. All varieties that are denoted as 74xxx indicate that they were original landraces discovered in 1974 in the local forests. Certain varieties were generationally selected for their pronounced quality, disease resistance, yield, and a good deal other qualities that the agricultural institutions of the 70's were selecting for. Once selected for, the seed pools were propagated and sold.

Bekele Yutute — FAQs

What is the 74158 variety?

It’s a JARC (Jimma Agricultural Research Centre) selection — part of the “74xxx” group of Ethiopian landraces first catalogued in 1974. These selections were generationally chosen for quality, disease resistance and yield before being propagated and sold.

What is an anaerobic natural coffee?

In an anaerobic natural process, whole cherries are fermented in low-oxygen or sealed environments before being dried as naturals. This often intensifies fruit character and perceived sweetness. (This lot is an Anaerobic Natural from the Murago station.)

Is this suitable for espresso and filter?

Yes — it’s suitable for both espresso and filter, and noted as excellent for espresso (black or milk based) and filter (black).

How long should I rest the coffee?

We suggest resting 14–57 days off roast for best results. Read more about resting coffee here.
