Are Coffee Subscriptions Worth It? How to Choose the Right One

Quick answer

Are coffee subscriptions worth it?

For most people who drink coffee at home every day, yes. A good specialty coffee subscription gets you freshly roasted beans on a schedule, usually at a lower price per bag, and introduces you to coffees you might never have picked yourself. To choose the right one:

What Is a Coffee Subscription?

A coffee subscription is a recurring delivery of coffee beans (or ground coffee) sent to you on a schedule – typically weekly, fortnightly or monthly. You choose how much coffee you want and how often, and the roaster takes care of the rest.

Specialty coffee subscriptions tend to come in two styles: rotating, where you get a different coffee each time, and fixed, where you get the same coffee every delivery. We'll look at which suits you further down.

The Benefits of a Coffee Subscription

  • Freshly roasted coffee, every time. Coffee from a specialty roaster is roasted in small batches and sent out soon after, rather than sitting on a supermarket shelf.
  • Better value. Most roasters reward subscribers with lower prices, free shipping or both, and larger plans usually bring the cost per bag down further.
  • Discover new coffees. A rotating subscription is one of the easiest ways to explore different origins, varieties and processing methods – and to find out what you really love.
  • Never run out. Your next bag arrives before the last one is finished, so there's no emergency trip for a supermarket jar.
  • Support producers. Regular, predictable orders help roasters plan their buying, which in turn helps them commit to long-term relationships with farms.

What to Look For Before You Subscribe

Not all subscriptions are built the same. Here's a quick checklist:

Check Why it matters
Roast date on the bag Tells you exactly how fresh it is and when it'll taste its best.
Frequency options Weekly, fortnightly and monthly options let you match deliveries to how much you drink.
Skip and pause Handy for holidays, or when you've still got a bag on the go.
Whole bean or ground Whole bean stays fresh for longer; ground should be matched to your brewer.
Shipping costs Free shipping can make a big difference to the real price per bag.
Sourcing transparency Named farms and producers are a strong sign of quality and fair buying.

On whole bean versus ground: if you have a grinder, whole bean will always give you the best results. We explain why in Does Grinding Coffee Fresh Matter? If you're thinking about upgrading, here are the best filter coffee grinders for home.

Rotating or Fixed: Which Suits You?

Rotating is great if you…

love trying new things, enjoy black coffee or filter, and want to explore origins, varieties and processes. Every bag is a new experience.

Fixed is great if you…

have found a coffee you love, make lots of milk drinks, or want the same dialled-in espresso every morning. It's also the way to go for decaf.

How Much Coffee Do You Need?

This is the question we get asked most. The easy way to work it out is to count cups. Assuming around 15g of coffee per cup (a typical filter brew or a single-shot milk drink), here's roughly how much you'll get through, and the plan that covers it:

Cups per day Coffee per week A good fit
1 About 105g 1 bag weekly for a little to spare, or 1 bag fortnightly if you skip the odd day (about 13 days’ worth)
2 About 210g 1kg monthly, or 2 bags fortnightly as a close match (about 13 days’ worth)
3 About 315g 2 bags weekly
4 (or two coffee drinkers) About 420g 1kg fortnightly
An office team About 1kg per 6–8 people Our office subscription

All figures are approximate – a 200g bag makes about 13 cups at 15g. If you pull double shots or brew larger mugs, bump it up a size. And if you find yourself with extra, there's no need to worry – see getting the best from every bag.

What Does a Subscription Cost Per Cup?

Specialty coffee at home is remarkably good value, even at the top end. Here's what our current subscription options work out at, using 15g per cup:

Subscription Price Approx. cups Per cup
Single Origin – 1 bag (200g) £12.95 13 about 97p
Single Origin – 2 bags (400g) £22.90 26 about 86p
Single Origin – 1kg £48.95 66 about 73p
Really Good Decaf – 1kg £39.95 66 about 60p

That's world-class, traceable coffee for a fraction of the price of a café flat white – and the more you drink, the better the value.

Getting the Best From Every Bag

Here's a tip most subscription guides skip: light roasted specialty coffee often tastes best a few weeks after roasting, not the day it arrives. Many of our coffees are at their peak somewhere between two and eight weeks off roast, and every coffee page lists its own recommended resting window.

That actually works beautifully with a subscription. Each delivery can rest while you finish the previous bag, so you're always brewing coffee at its best. If bags start to stack up, pop one in the freezer – it'll keep tasting great for months.

When One-Off Bags Might Suit You Better

Subscriptions are brilliant for regular drinkers, but they're not the only way to enjoy great coffee. One-off bags can be the better fit if you drink coffee only occasionally, want to hunt down a particular coffee, or are buying something special as a treat. You can browse our full range of coffee beans here.

The good news is that most flexible subscriptions, including ours, let you skip or pause any time, so there's very little commitment either way.

Coffee Subscription FAQs

Are coffee subscriptions worth it?

For anyone who drinks coffee at home regularly, usually yes. You get freshly roasted coffee on a schedule, typically at a lower price per bag, and a rotating subscription is a great way to discover new coffees.

How much coffee do I need each month?

At around 15g per cup, one cup a day uses roughly 450g a month and two cups a day roughly 900g. For one cup a day, a 200g bag weekly gives you a little to spare, while a bag every fortnight covers about 13 days. For two cups a day, a 1kg bag each month is the best fit.

Should I choose whole bean or ground?

If you have a grinder, whole bean stays fresher for longer and gives the best flavour. If not, choose ground coffee matched to your brewer, such as filter, cafetière or stovetop.

Can I pause or skip my Harmony subscription?

Yes. You can skip or pause your subscription at any time.

Can I give a coffee subscription as a gift?

Yes. Our gift subscription is prepaid for 3, 6 or 12 months, with a new single origin coffee delivered each month and free shipping.
